Poor Britney? I suppose so.

Last week I read about a church in Texas that was trying to support Britney Spears. The pastor spoke about how if a mom like Britney was our neighbor (single-mom, struggling with drug addiction, losing custody, etc.) as Christ-followers, “Wouldn’t you pray for her and offer her support and encouragement?” So he encouraged his congregation to write her letters of support with Christ-like love and truth.
It was interesting and challenging to think about. A very simple yet obvious reminder that because of her fame and wealth (among other things) I am quick to judge, condemn and criticize and insulate my righteous-self. I was challenged, not because I am going to write Britney a letter anytime soon, but to check my own mind, sense of pride, and willingness to see people as the hurting, needy people we are (no matter what our income/fame/wealth/status/etc.)
I was challenged to think about who I pray for versus who I judge…
Then, this morning I read this article. Apparently, the lesson continues.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The pop princess is a big spender.Court papers released Thursday in Britney Spears‘ custody dispute with Kevin Federline show she spends lavishly on clothes and entertainment, and doesn’t save or invest any of her roughly $737,000 monthly income.Spears‘ monthly expenses include $49,267 in mortgage for two houses, $16,000 for clothes and $102,000 on entertainment, gifts and vacation, according to her financial declaration.Although she’s often photographed eating fast food, Spears declares she spends about $4,758 per month dining out. Meanwhile, she spends zero on education, savings and investments and gives $500 a month in charitable contributions, the documents said.
I am so thankful that Jesus gave some instruction on how to pray, because I would definitely get prayer and piousness confused if I was left to ‘settle’ these things on my own.
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“This, then, is how you should pray:
” ‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
Matthew 6:5-15
